Bill Nye The Science Guy Discusses Reversing Climate Change In ‘Unstoppable’

Bill Nye, famous from his hit children’s science show “Bill Nye the Science Guy”, says that even though man-made climate change is a problem we are currently faced with, we have the ability to reverse it.

In his second book, “Unstoppable: Harnessing Science to Change the World”, Nye explains the basics of climate science, proving the presence of climate change as a result of human behavior. According to Billings Gazette, “Unstoppable” doesn’t read like a textbook, rather encouraging the reader to take action.

The book examines pros and cons of different technological advances that people can try using in their everyday lives to reduce their carbon footprint.

National Geographic interviewed Bill Nye about global warming and the scientist insisted that there is already enough renewable energy available to power the entire world, it is a matter of actually harnessing the power and making the switch from the current power sources.

There’s enough energy in most places—wind, solar, tidal and geothermal—to run the whole world. What we need is to DO IT. We need to get started. What we want to do is provide electricity, worldwide communication via the Internet, and clean water to everyone in the world.

Nye’s solution for energy reform involves new regulations, specifically adding a fee on the production of carbon dioxide and release of methane. He makes the argument that nobody currently pays for the carbon dioxide that is being released into the atmosphere even though it affects the entire world’s climate.

His theory is that people would move away from using as much fossil fuel. More efficient technologies would be developed such as cars that get better gas mileage and ships that could transport cargo more fuel efficiently. It would also discourage some worldwide shipping and allow for more goods to be made closer to where they will be used.

Nye also told about his own home and the innovations he has had implemented there. His house is powered by solar panels, a solar hot water system and energy efficient windows. He is able to sustain his own power usage with his power generation and believes self-sufficiency is the answer for the worldwide problem. We have the resources so now it’s just a matter of putting them to use.
