With summer officially underway, it’s more important than ever to keep on protecting your skin, especially your face – especially now, with heightened risks from so many diseases and disorders out there.

Here are some of the must-dos this summer, to make sure your face stays fresh and healthy up until fall rolls around and it’s time to start wrapping up again.

Sunscreen – putting on sunscreen is important all year round, but during the summer, slather it on and don’t leave home without it. Cover your entire body, and don’t forget areas like your ears, scalp and the back of your neck. According to experts, more or less enough sunscreen to fill a shot glass should do it for the whole body.

Lip protection – a lot of people neglect the lips. Look for lip products with SPF 15, and try switching to a good lip balm for now, as they hydrate more.

Water – hydration is key during these hot months. Drink plenty of water, but seasonal fruits and vegetables in juices or smoothies make for great alternatives, as well.

Self-tan – if you can’t even imagine your summer without a tan, skip baking under the sun for hours and go for self-tanners that provide excellent results without damaging your skin.

Exfoliate – use gentle exfoliation daily to slough off those dead skin cells, keep your pores clean and give you a fresh, rosy glow even during the hottest days. Don’t forget to remove makeup before going to bed.

Revive – if you inadvertently spend too much time under the sun, try this trick to re-hydrate your face: rinse the exposed area with cold water and a gentle cleanser, apply a dark spot correcting product to sunspots and moisturize.

BB Cream – those who refuse to go makeup free this summer can try a BB cream. These moisturize, even out skin tones and illuminate your face without looking heavy or greasy.

Cover and reapply – if you know you’ll be spending lots of time outdoors, remember to take a hat and sunglasses, or some sort of cover-up if you’re headed to the beach. Reapply your sunscreen at least once every two hours.

Sweat – working out in the summer can really make you sweat. Although it gets incredibly hot, sweating helps increase circulation, eliminates toxins and gives your skin a healthy glow.

Timing – the best time to be outdoors is before 10:00 in the morning and after 4:00 in the afternoon. These are the hours when the sun’s rays are less harmful, so try to schedule your activities around those hours.
