Pope Francis Meets Angelina Jolie

Angelina Jolie met privately with Pope Francis at the Vatican on Thusrday while in Rome for a screening of her new film, Unbroken, Time reported.

Last year, the American actress and filmmaker met with high-profile figures including the likes of none other than Queen Elizabeth, who named the actress an honorary dame in October of 2014.

Rev Federico Lombardi, the Vatican’s spokesman, was quoted by The Guardian discussing what the new film portrays.

(the film shows) positive human and spiritual values, in particular forgiveness.

Jolie’s new film, Unbroken, “tells the story of Louis Zamperini, an Olympic track star whose B-24 bomber crashed in the Pacific during the second world war. He and two crewmates survived on a raft for 47 days, only to be captured by the Japanese.”

Forbes named Brad Pitt’s 32-year-old wife Hollywood’s highest-paid actress in 2009, 2011 and 2013.

Vatican spokesman Lombardi indicated that Jolie was with her two children attending the film’s screening at the Pontifical Academy for Sciences and while Pope Francis did not watch the film, he did exchange a few words with Jolie after the screening at the Apostolic Palace. Two of her children, a brother, and a cast member will also in attendance.

The meeting between the Hollywood star and the Bishop of Rome was arranged by the Argentine head of the Pontifical Academy, Monsignor Marcelo Sánchez Sorondo. The Guardian reports that Sorondo is “a good friend of the pope’s.”

Angelina has received an Academy Award, three Golden Globe Awards, and two Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Pope Francis, the reigning pope of the Catholic Church and leader of the worldwide Catholic Church, was born in Flores, Buenos Aires, Argentina. The 78-year-old absolute sovereign of the Vatican City State began his papacy on March 13, 2013.

The Maleficent star said in a statement released by Universal Pictures to Us Weekly, “Being invited with my film to the Vatican is an honor and a great tribute to the story that I have told in Unbroken. The story of the hero Louis a great example of strength and forgiveness.”

Brad Pitt was also scheduled to attend the Vatican trip to visit the pope, but did not as the result of a “last minute change,” a source indicated to Us Weekly.
