A man in China had what must have been an incredibly bizarre experience while sitting on the toilet – his rectum suddenly fell out of his body in what is medically called rectal prolapse.

Doctors at the Sixth Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University in Guangdong Province treated a patient on February 4, who showed up in a unique predicament, Tech Times reports. Local reports say that the man, who remains unidentified, had been playing mobile games while sitting on the toilet for around 30 minutes, when his rectum suddenly dropped.

The patients apparently rushed to the hospital after noticing a “ball-sized” lump that released from anus, but remained attached to his body.

Dr. Su Dan, the doctor on call, the man had a severe case of rectal prolapse. He had the condition since he was four years old, but had never gotten treatment for it. According to reports, the lump had previously been able to retract into the patient’s body, or back into position. In this case, it could no longer do the same.

A computer tomography scan showed a 6.3-inch bulge outside the man’s anus, and doctors observed blood spots and bruises on his intestinal wall, as well. Su said that in the process of excretion, the man’s pelvic muscles might have weakened, and the long duration of sitting on the toilet triggered the prolapse.

Rectal prolapse happened when the rectum loses its grip inside the body, turning inside out while telescoping through the anus. It is an uncomfortable condition, but does not usually require immediate emergency care.

The American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons (ASCRS) says that rectal prolapse is rare, affecting around 2.5 out of 100,000 people, mostly adults over the age of 50. Women over 50 years old are six times more likely than men to develop the condition, while men develop the condition at a younger age, often in their 40s.

The patient has reportedly been treated and is recovering. Su cautioned anyone with rectal prolapse to get themselves checked and treated as soon as possible.
