Amazon Reports Record 10 Million New Prime Customers

In its annual post-Christmas press release, Amazon announced more than 10 million new customers tried its Prime service for the first time over the holiday season.

Amazon Prime is a subscription service available for $99 per year that offers free two-day shipping on most items sold through the retailer, access to its streaming service, and access to a lenders library of Kindle books, according to USA Today.

Amazon, which plans to offer same-day delivery on all items sold by third-party merchants, said customers ordered over 10 times as many items using Prime during the holidays over last year, Reuters reported.

On Cyber Monday, Amazon customers ordered over 18 toys per second, just from the mobile sector. The top-selling toy of the holidays was the Sparkle Princess Elsa Doll from “Frozen.” More than 60% of customers shopped from their phones.

Amazon sold four times more Kindle e-readers during Black Friday over last year. Its TV streaming dongle, the Fire Stick, became the company’s fastest-selling device ever, although no hard sales numbers were provided for either device.

The last order delivered before Christmas was placed at 10:24 pm on December 24 and delivered at 11:06 pm. This customer ordered via Prime Now, a new service launched this month allowing New York City residents to receive deliveries in under two hours, according to Business Insider.

Prime now offers fast delivery on select items that include electronics and household items for an $8 fee. Amazon plans to expand the program to other cities next year.
