Lindsay Lohan Hospitalized With Rare Mosquito-Borne Virus In London

Lindsay Lohan has reportedly been hospitalized in London after contracting the rare virus chikungunya during a trip to Bora Bora last month.

Lohan was admitted to King Edward VII hospital in London with a high fever and joint pain described as “unbearable.” Her mother, Dina, was reportedly on her way to London to support her.

Lohan was in Bora Bora at the end of December to film a commercial for Esurance, believed to be for the Super Bowl, and stayed for personal time. She tweeted that she had contracted the virus on December 31. Lohan returned to Los Angeles after the trip before flying to London, according to the Huffington Post.

Lohan posted Instagram pictures from her trip to Bora Bora and said she was enjoying her trip despite the illness.

In good faith with good people. I refuse to let a virus effect [sic] my peaceful vacation.

Lohan was released from the hospital the same day after being treated on an outpatient basis. Her fever broke but she was still in pain and referred to a specialist. The joint pain she is suffering may last for months, according to TMZ.

Chikungunya is a rare mosquito-borne virus that is rarely fatal but symptoms can be debilitating. The most common symptoms of the virus include severe joint pain, fatigue and fever. More than 51,000 infections have been reported in the French Polynesia region, with nine deaths blamed on the virus, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The joint pain associated with the virus can last anywhere from weeks to years. There is no specific treatment for chikungunya, although medication can ease symptoms.
